to crop or not to crop for DVB sources, aspect ratio issues?
by Pierre Catello 15 Feb '07

15 Feb '07

Hi everyone, I would like to use Mencoder to archive my DVB recording (MPEG2 transport streams)... Keeping the original format is the no brainer option, but of obviously it isn't optimal for space saving (black borders). The problem is that format are often different for TV programs: normal 4:3 4:3 anamorphic (544x576 -> 720x576) 16:9 anamorphic in a 544x576 source 16:9 anamoprhic in a PAL source 2:35 anamorphic in a 544x576 source 2:35 anamorphic in a PAL source and then all imaginable hybrid formats when the program has been already cropped by the broadcaster... If I crop before encoding, is there a safe way to compute the aspect ratio for the player? Thanks

hardcoding subtitles into video
by Mikhail Ramendik 14 Feb '07

14 Feb '07

Hello, I have a video source which I am able, after some tweaking, to view with MPlayer including subtitles. However, when I run mencoder with exactly the same source and options (plus encoding and uoutput), subttiles don't get included in the result. I want them included, and hardcoded into the video stream. How do I do this? mencoder 1.0pre8-3.3.5 -- Yours, Mikhail Ramendik

People, Can mencoder convert SWF files to AVI? I have recorded a flash video using vnc2swf and it would be convenient if these steps work . . Bug: crash while encoding to DV
by Levente Novák 14 Feb '07

This bug was already reported but it happens also with the current SVN build. With the command line below (which should be valid AFAIK), MEncoder crashes (segfaults). Make sure that you supply exactly two streams: video: 25fps or 29.97fps, audio: 2ch/48Khz/PCM (50Mbps allows an optional second audio stream) Here the program segfaults. Why does it state that it can't initialize DV format as I do supply 2ch/48Khz/PCM audio and 25 fps YV12 video? Levente PS: this should be a problem with lavf as when the container is AVI, there is no crash (but the resulting file is not DV, of course). With ffmpeg, encoding to DV works well when specifying -target dv (does it also use lavf?). Unfortunately it seems I can not use video filters within ffmpeg which is vital as bttv is borked with YV12 (chroma sampling bug) and I have to capture in YUY2.

mp4, aac and mencoder confusion...
by Pierre Catello 13 Feb '07

13 Feb '07

Hi everyone, I made some .avi with Mencoder that mux MPEG4 ASP video (xvid) with AAC audio, with a command line like that : mencoder input.mpg -ovc xvid -xvidopts... \ -oac faac -faacopts br=128:mpeg=4 -o output.avi Mplayer plays them fine, but other windows players (Media Player classic, or WMP 9) do not play the sound. I tried to remux the avi to MP4 with MP4Box and Mencoder : mencoder -oac copy -of rawaudio output.avi -o temp.aac MP4Box -convert output.avi#video output.mp4 MP4Box -add temp.aac output.mp4 no errors are reported, but the resulting mp4 is quiet (no sound), even with mplayer. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong ? Thanks

Problema cortar en ciertos formatos
by Ivan Arcos 13 Feb '07

13 Feb '07

Muchas gracias.
