i have added the following parameters and sofar it seems to work on most files: >mencoder input.avi -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=64 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4v2:mbd=2:keyint=5:subcmp=2:dia=2:mv0:autoaspect -ofps 24 -o output.avi my tests were mostly done with divx encoded input files and when ignoring "-ofps 24", it seemed to have problems.. adding "autoaspect" removed the ODML warning, however I found out that the issue was not related to that, but the missing "-ofps". i am not sure if all the lavcopts are necessary though, can't find documentation about all of them.. -e __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Compressing the photo camera Canon A610 video to mpeg4 at the best quality.

I have photo camera Canon A610 that produces video movies (mplayer says it is mjpeg) at 30 fps. Some second over 4 minutes of this video takes 512Mb! I believe I can have *the very same* movie quality at less capacity. So, as have tried not few the mencoder command line combinations and was not satisfied with the quality, I give my questions to those who are more expert with it. My question is, What is the mencoder command line that will compress in mpeg4 saving the same picture quality, visually? Second question is, How to reduce the noise value the camera produces at the least quality loosing? Between quality/size choosing the choice must be given to quality. Thank You for Your time and desire to share Your experience. PS Please, any questions. I will answer.

Hi, My question may seem somewhat heretic, but I insist there is no troll intended. It is straightforward: is there any *comprehensive* tutorial about converting a DVD to DivX with MEncoder? aac encoding with lavc

Hello. For a while now it has been possible to encode aac audio with -oac lavc. However, the man page still doesn't say anything about it. Wouldn't it be good to update the man page? I'm a little curious if there are more options to the aac encoding than just bitrate... Fredrik Eriksson

New quality problem with low contrast images

Hi. I'm having again a problem to get a quality image. I recorded a movie with my dvd-recorder from a satellite channel. Now I'm trying to pass to divx. I'm having problems with some scenes. Scenes well illuminated (outside, with sun) look very good. But the movie has a lot of scenes with very low light. They are dark but not very dark, maybe they have low contrast. The problem is that those scenes look very bad in my xvid, a lot of blocks, very annoying. In the original video, image looks much better. This is the command I used: mencoder -noodml -o temp/video2.avi \ -oac mp3lame -lameopts vol=0:mode=3:cbr:br=64 \ -ovc xvid \ -xvidencopts bitrate=1200:nointerlacing:nopacked:pass=2:max_iquant=15:max_pquant=15:max_bquant=15:max_bframes=0 \ -vf-add crop=688:560:20:8 \ -vf-add pp=l5 \ -vf-add scale=576:432 -zoom \ -vf-add harddup \ -force-avi-aspect 4:3 \ -sws 9 \ temp/video.avi I tried everything. I used max_iquant=4:max_pquant=4. I tried different values for -sws, also tried yadif instead of l5. I raised the bitrate up to 4000. I used b-frames. I used libavcodec instead of xvid. But nothing improved the quality, it always remained the same. Removing the filters (crop, deinterlace, scale) may improve a little bit, but there's still very visible blocks. And anyway I don't want to make a video with such a high resolution (720x576) because I would need a bigger bitrate. I also tried quant_type=mpeg. With that option the image is very different, the blocks are smaller but there are even more, all over the whole image and are even more annoying. If I use hqdn3d after the other filters, yes it removes most of the blocks, but image loses a lot of details. Any idea of how to improve the image? Or maybe is this a limitation of mencoder or the codecs? I got from internet a video with an excelent quality, but in one scene there's a moment when the contrast goes down for some seconds, and then the image turns very blocky. -- Pepe

Dropped frames trouble

Hi all, I'm trying to convert a PAL mpv (mpeg video) stream to avi/xvid on windows using the command line: mencoder.exe input.mpv -o output.avi -of avi -ovc xvid -vf scale=640:368 -xvidencopts bitrate=1000:turbo:vhq=0 This worked, in that I got a reasonable "output.avi". However the output avi has less frames than the input mpv file and runs for less time, and so the audio (mpa) is out of sync when remuxed (via intermediate wav file) with the avi. The mpv file us 1:24:25.0 long in 126625 frames (25.000fr/sec), however the avi is 1:24:19.56 with 126489 frames. So I'm losing ~6 seconds of video somewhere in the conversion process. The mpa file is exactly the same length as the mpv file, which gives credence to the mpv's stats. Is there an option I can set to cause it to not drop frames at all? The orginal mpg file that the mpv and mpa came from was generated by HDTVtoMPEG2.exe from a .ts file saved by WebScheduler from free to air TV. HDTVtoMPEG2 allows you to cut ads out and saves the result as mpg without any re-encoding. So the mpv file may have corrupt frames caused by reception dropouts. FYI I demuxed the mpg with PVAStrumento.exe which does a bunch of error correction and resyncing, which I've found to be very good at fixing dubious mpg files. So I doubt that is an issue. If I play the mpv and mpa files together using Media Player Classic they stay in sync, so I'm pretty sure that the issue is definately in the mencoder step. Can I need to maintain corrupt frames in the output so that sync with audio isn't lost? I don't care whats in corrupt frames, I just don't want them dropped entirely. Pointers? Ideas? Suggestions? Converting mpeg4 / h264 files, first few seconds corrupted video

Hi When I try to convert a H264 (quicktime) file to FLV, the first few seconds of the video get corrupted, as if it is missing the initial key frame. The video is fine after a few seconds. Any idea why this might be happening, or is it a known issue.. DD.

wrong framerate for 3gp files..

Hi I am trying to encode a 3gp file to flv. However, mencoder detects the wrong frame rate, and resulting flv gets that. $ mplayer -vo null -ao null -frames 0 -identify sonyz520aphone.3gp <snip> MPlayer dev-SVN-r19503-4.0.2 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team . . ID_VIDEO_ID=0 ID_AUDIO_ID=1 VIDEO: [s263] 176x144 24bpp 2.551 fps 0.0 kbps ( 0.0 kbyte/s) ID_FILENAME=sonyz520aphone.3gp ID_DEMUXER=mov ID_VIDEO_FORMAT=s263 ID_VIDEO_BITRATE=0 ID_VIDEO_WIDTH=176 ID_VIDEO_HEIGHT=144 ID_VIDEO_FPS=2.551 ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=0.0000 </snip> This video actually has a framerate of 9.89 fps, but mencoder detected 2.55fps. If this framerate is explicitely passed to mencoder, it encodes the video correctly. Is there a way for mencoder to detect the correct frame rate? Am I missing something here? Thanks, DD.

Hi :) As I research on google, converting AMC to other movie formats has been discussed by japanese people who are working on mobile products. However, it seems there is no way to convert AMC by using mencoder because its Quicktime codec is too old (that's what those people have concluded). Ffmpeg doesn't even correspond to AMC, and I thought mencoder is the only chance to do it. But, in fact, mencoder doesn't convert AMC to other movie formats completely, which means the converted file always has no sound when AMC's sound codec is QCELP. This is just useless for people who're working on mobile. I would like to know if there are any ways to accomplish what I would like to do. :( In addition, I would rather use "command line conversion" than using GUI application. Anyone knows?

Can't get enough quality with xvid

I've got a video from internet, it's an xvid with a very excelent image quality. Unfortunately I have to scale it a little bit so I can see it correctly in my dvd player. The original video is about 1 hour and 20 minutes length, and its bitrate is 1084 kbps, resolution is 704x528. I re-encoded to scale to 704x576, but image in my video is worse, more "blocky". This is the command I used (this is the 2nd pass, the first one is the same with "pass=1:turbo"): mencoder -noodml -o my_video.avi \ -oac copy \ -ovc xvid \ -xvidencopts bitrate=1064:nointerlacing:nopacked:pass=2:max_iquant=31:max_pquant=31:max_bquant=31:max_bframes=0 \ -vf-add scale=704:576 -zoom \ -vf-add harddup \ -force-avi-aspect 4:3 \ -sws 9 \ orig_video.avi I didn't use b-frames because my dvd player doesn't like them in hi-res videos. Is there any other option I should use to improve quality? -- Pepe
