shrinking mpeg4 video a little bit
by Enrico Weigelt 20 Sep '05

Hi folks, i've just converted some mpeg2-stream (2x svcd rip) to mpeg4/divx, but doesn't fit on a single CDR. Its just a few MB too long. How can I compress slightly "harder" to get it a little bit smaller ? thx -- my signature was censored by attila ... ;-P

converting multiple audio streams
by José Queiroz 19 Sep '05

Hi all, I have a XviD coded AVI, which I need to convert to DivX. But the movie have 2 audios (both AC3) . Tried a simple "-oac copy", but this only copies one of the two streams. Using "-aid #" allowed me to choose which of the streams to copy, but I want both of them. Searching a little, I saw that this is a limitation of mencoder. Is this right? If not, how can I do it?

In this case, however, it pointed out that you weren't using - ofps, so you're getting a 1000fps AVI file. With WMV files, you really have to guess an approximate frame-rate (eg 24/25/30), and use that as your OFPS value to prevent getting millions of duplicate frames. > Anyways, I attach the output, the file, and the not-working script, > maybe they'll be useful, since I don't get what you need to know.... I read the output you attached, and didn't see any segfault/crash/ errors of any kind. I ran your script on the sample file you attached, and it encoded just fine (although with thousands of duplicate frames). The output 1.wmv.avi file plays just fine. This was with dev-CVS-050907

Hi. I have this wmv3 file that my PB does not read, since thare are no dll for PPC architecture, hence I need to reencode it into a decent format. This script won't do it, give me a clue please. I am recompiling the Mplayer from current cvs, the version I used for the examples is the one of a few weeks ago. In any case even if I do the single step it does not work well at all, and regardless of the fact that I input 200 as bitrate it does it at a very low one, which it cannot identify even with the -forceidx. Am I doing something wrong? I suppose so, please help. Any idea why this is happening is there something encoded incorrectly on the disc? Thanks again Dom

The source is a pal dvd with a regular 5.1DD soundtrack. What does the mc setting actually do and do you know what actually causes this problem? I did try another disc and for what I saw it didn't have this problem although the disc in question takes until 9% of the first pass before the error pops up, this goes on for a few minutes where it's stops only to start up a short while later. Thanks again Dom

How to determine size of audio in an avi
by Jason Addison 16 Sep '05

16 Sep '05

How can I determine the size of the audio portion of an avi? In section 8.1.2 "Constant quantizer vx. multipass" of the Manual there is a formula to calculate the bitrate. The formula requires the size of the audio portion. In section 8.1.10 "Audio" there is an example of how to dump the audio into a file. You could do this and then check the size of the resulting audio file. Is there a way to determine the size of the audio without dumping it to a file? Thanks, Jason

h263 length problem with raw stream encoding
by jose＠tecnosfera.org 16 Sep '05

16 Sep '05

Hi everyone again!! I sent a mail about this problem few weeks ago, with no results.. but yesterday i was chatting in the #mplayer channel and i found more people with this problem, so i'll try again to find an answer about it... Here we go: I'm encoding mpeg and avi videos to a raw h263 stream. When i pass mencoder default encoding options for lavc codec the resulting video looks fine, but when i try to manage bitrate ( -vbitrate option ) the resulting video is less than the original video, i.e. the duration of the original videos are 1.33, and with a target bitrate of 48kbs the resulting video duration is 1.31... I need to manage the bitrate because i need this video stream for a video-conference application, and the bandwidth is limitate ( 48 - 50 kbs and 10 fps ). I'm using MEncoder Sherpya-MinGW-20050906-3.4.4 for windows, and my mencoder command is like follows: >mencoder example.avi -sws 9 -vf scale=176:144 -nosound -of rawvideo -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=h263:vbitrate=48 -ofsp 10 -o example.263 You can try to do this at home with any video and compare the both lengths ( avi and raw ). ¿Any ideas to solve this problem ? Thanks in advance and excuse me for my pitiful english.
