Can Mencoder reduce screen size of AVI file? Sharp Zaurus PDA screen size is 320:240 but AVI movie resolution is 640:480. Any clues appreciated. TIA. Sorry for Newbie question, I am new to Mplayer. -- Anthony(a)pucho.com

Call for video encoding settings
by Guillaume POIRIER 25 Sep '05

25 Sep '05

Hello folks, I'd like to add some encoding settings examples in our HTML documentation. Those settings off course highly depend on personal preferences, so highlighting a certain encoding setting as "very high quality", "high quality", "fast", and "realtime" won't probably make everyone happy, but I guess it'll still be better than having nothing. Here is what I propose (for lavc MPEG-4, XviD and x264, but I'm also interested in MPEG-2, wmv... settings, also long as it's supported by MEncoder off course). * Very High Quality: lacv: ? XviD: chroma_opt:vhq=4:bvhq=1:gmc:quant_type=mpeg x264: subq=6:4x4mv:8x8dct:me=3:frameref=5:bframes=3:b_pyramid:weight_b * High quality: lavc: vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:trell:v4mv:last_pred=2:dia=-1:vmax_b_frames=1:cmp=3:subcmp=3:precmp=0:vqcomp=0.6:turbo XviD: vhq=2:bvhq=1:psnr:chroma_opt:quant_type=mpeg x264: subq=5:4x4mv:8x8dct:frameref=2:bframes=3:b_pyramid:weight_b * Fast: lavc: vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:trell:v4mv XviD: -- (default) x264: subq=4:bframes=2:b_pyramid:weight_b * Realtime: lavc: vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:turbo XviD: turbo:nochroma_me:notrellis:max_bframes=0:vhq=0 x264: (irrevelant) Guillaume -- A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. -- Winston Churchill

[SPAM] (6.70/6.00) compiling with faac support
by Alex Teslik 25 Sep '05

25 Sep '05

Hello, FreeBSD 4.10-RELEASE-p5 MPlayer 1.0pre7try2-2.95.4 FAAC 1.24 ffmpeg version 0.4.9-pre1, build 4756, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --cc=cc --prefix=/usr/local --make=gmake --disable-debug --enable-memalign-hack --enable-shared --source-path=/usr/ports/multimedia/ffmpeg-devel/work/FFMpeg-20050620 --enable-a52 --disable-a52bin --enable-dts --enable-faac --enable-faad --enable-faadbin --enable-gpl --enable-mp3lame --enable-libogg --enable-pp --enable-shared-pp --enable-pthreads --enable-vorbis The problem: I am trying to encode an mp4 file with AAC audio. I can do it in ffmpeg with: ffmpeg -r 29.97 -i test.VOB -b 300 -s 480x360 -vcodec mpeg4 -hq -4mv -qmin 2 -qmax 10 -nr -deinterlace -acodec aac -ab 64 -ar 44100 test.mp4 but I cannot enable the faac features of mencoder. I tried: -oac faac -faacopts br=64 but the oac is not recognized. mencoder -oac help says: Available codecs: copy - frame copy, without re-encoding (useful for AC3) pcm - uncompressed PCM audio mp3lame - cbr/abr/vbr MP3 using libmp3lame lavc - FFmpeg audio encoder (MP2, AC3, ...) I know I have faac installed, and it works for ffmpeg. I even tried -oac lavc. mencoder test.VOB -ovc lavc-oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:v4mv:vbitrate=600:vqmin=2:vqmax=31:acodec=aac:abitrate=64 -vf hqdn3d,pp=hdeblock/vdeblock/dering/cubicipoldeint/autolevels,scale=480:360:0:0:2,unsharp=l3x3:5:c3x3:5 -o test.mp4 no luck. Any tips on how I can get faac working for mencoder? Thanks, Alex

Output bitrate significantly less than vbitrate
by n0dalus 23 Sep '05

Hi, I am trying to produce valid mpeg2 video for use in dvd players. The problem is that I keep ending up with undersized video. I am trying to encode 22 minutes of PAL ogg video into a 700mb mpeg2. mencoder -of mpeg -vf scale=720:576,harddup -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3:abitrate=192:vcodec=mpeg2video:keyint=25:vbitrate=4251648:aspect=4/3:vrc_maxrate=9800:vrc_buf_size=1835:vpass=1 -mpegopts format=dvd -srate 48000 -passlogfile 'video.pass' -o 'video.mpg' 'video.ogm' For the second pass I just change it to pass=2 (I assume it doesn't hurt to leave the other options there.) The vbitrate of 4152kbps (k = 1024) combined with a 192kbit abitrate should produce a total average bitrate of 4344kbps. For 22 minutes of video this should produce a 700mb file. However I get a ~400mb file. I thought I would tell it to use a higher bitrate (like 9000kbps) to test it and hope that it would average out higher, but it was only just more than 400mb. I have read that this has to do with vqmin/vqmax/lmax/lmin and vqscale/vqcomp but I have no idea which, if any, of those I should try to change. Searching the list archives, I was able to find a few references to a similar problem, but with several conflicting ideas (some say don't touch vqscale, some say changing vqscale will reduce video quality in high motion scenes, some say don't use vbitrate at all but instead use vqscale, etc.) I am also concerned that changing these values might create something that isn't playable on dvd players. In essence, how do I get mencoder to produce dvd-complient mpeg2 video with an average bitrate equal to my vbitrate setting. I am needing to automate this for an unknown number of files (I have a script that produces the mencoder command from values it parses from a test run of mplayer), so I would rather not have to do too much trial and error (I can program the script to automatically adjust certain values given the output file size and try again, but I would rather it got it right 1st try.) n0dalus.

mencoder audio problem

Hello, I posted the below question on fedoraforum.org but didn't get much help. Hello, I am having some problems getting sound when using mencoder to capture video/audio from my camcorder. Video is fine, but when I run the follow command and play the output file in mplayer I do not get sound. mencoder -tv driver=v4l:input=1:width=512:height=384:fps=25:nor m=ntsc tv:// -ovc copy -oac copy -o file.avi My plan was to first copy the video/audio to my hard drive with mencoder and then encode it with the xvid/mp3lame codecs. I can hear the sound when I am running the caputre. The audio out from my caputre card is patched into my mic port on my onboard sound card and within the alsamixer the mic is set to capture. I'm a beginner at this sort of thing so it's all a bit cloudly. Thanks for any help. I have 2 sound cards in my pc one onboard and one pci so someone suggested I add adevice to my command. So then I tried the command below. mencoder -tv driver=v4l:input=1:adevice=/dev/dsp: width=512:height=384:fps=25:norm=ntsc tv:// -ovc copy -oac copy -o file.avi This didn't work either. I need some help. Thanks, Chris

I'm sure you know better than I. But I > have never experienced it over a pretty wide range of encodings. If you have not tried NTSC encoding, then that's probably the reason why you have not experienced sync issues. I personally always use the same kinda audio track on each pass, so I can't say what appends if you don't do the same thing than what I do. However, I did read a post on the ML with someone who experienced some encoding problems that were due to not having the same kind of track on each passes. Now, do the way you like, if it works for you, that's good. I just wanted to warn you that this solution was not ideal (but what's to be considered ideal when talking about video encoding?) Hi, this is my first mail to this list. Hope i am not posting a stupid question and i could express myself in english. I am trying to use mencoder to extract a movie off a dvd. The command i use is like: mencoder dvd://1 -o whatevermovie.avi -oac copy -ovc lavc -vf scale 1024:800 -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 (all one line) However, the output movie doesnt have a very high quality. It seems to be very ´pixelized´ I am using SuSE 9.3, with mplayer and mencoder downloaded from Packman, a well known rpm source for suse distro. Is there something i could do to impruve the results? TiVo MPEG-TY file encoding problem...
by Burrows, Ashley 21 Sep '05

I've transcoded many files from my tivo (a UK Series 1 tivo) into DivX. I use the following command line: Mencoder <tivofile.ty> -o <divxfile.avi> -mc 0 -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:acod ec=mp3:vbitrate=800:keyint=250:vpass=1:turbo -ffourcc DIVX -vop scale=::::::pal Mostly, this works with no problems at all, but every now and then, it doesn't work (about 1 file in 10 maybe)... this is the output from the precompiled version available at http://armory.nicewarrior.org/projects/cygmp/ MEncoder dev-CVS-050113-21:57-3.3.3 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Xeon/Celeron Northwood (Family: 8, Stepping: 4) Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes CPUflags: Type: 8 MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1 Compiled with runtime CPU detection - WARNING - this is not optimal! Any idea why mencoder/mplayer thinks this is a MPEG-PS file rather than a MPEG-TY file (which it is). The same file plays back fine on the TiVo and in Windows Media Player, using TyShow, so I do not believe it to be corrupt in any way. Any help or advice much appreciated... Thanks, Ash.

mpegopts vframerate working?
by David Shay 20 Sep '05

20 Sep '05

I am using mencoder with mpegopts in an attempt to create DVD output. Among other options, I am using: -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3:abitrate=192:vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=3000:keyint=15 -vf scale=720:480,harddup -of mpeg -mpegopts vaspect=4/3:vbitrate=3000:format=dvd:vframerate=30000/1001 -ofps 30000/1001 When I run tcprobe (from transcode) on the output file, though, it consistently reports the framerate as 23.976 (24000/1001). Does vframerate work or is tcprobe broken?
