I am having a trouble encoding HDTV files down to lower-resolution and bitrate MPEG2 files for playing on an A/V appliance (Hauppauge MediaMVP), although the issue is apparent even when playing through mplayer itself. Anyway, mplayer plays the files perfectly without any loss of AV sync, on both Unix and Windows machines. When using mencoder, however, it loses sync, even with a very simple command: mencoder -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=4000 -ofps 30000/1001 -vf scale=640:360,expand=0:-120 -of mpeg $INFILE -o $OUTFILE I do get errors such as: ERROR: SCR: 33.011 VPTS: 32.999 DELTA=-0.012 secs I am using CVS mencoder from a few weeks ago, but I believe I had the issue with stock mencoder of recent ilk as well. These files are recorded using a pcHDTV 3000 card using the DVB drivers and using mythTV, and are saved as MPEG TS (transport streams). Any thoughts? I have also tried various -mpegopts as well, to no avail. I've tried -mc 0 and -noskip, although from reading other recent posts that appears to be a Bad Idea in general, and indeed it didn't help things.

problems with target size and xvid

Hi everybody, I am using mplayer-1.0_pre5-r5 and xvid-1-0.2 on gentoo linux and I have a problem with the target size. I dont get the size I specify. I use mencoder as encoder and these are the settings I use. mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device /path/to/dvd -nosound -xvidencopts :bitrate=-1790943:pass=1:vhq=4:me_quality=6:chroma_me:quant_type=mpeg:max_bframes=2:gmc -o /dev/null mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device /path/to/dvd -nosound -ovc xvid -xvidencopts :bitrate=-1790943:pass=2:vhq=4:me_quality=6:chroma_me:quant_type=mpeg:max_bframes=2:gmc -o output.avi Although this should have produced a filesize of about 1.7GB I got 2.8GB. Could it be that the second pass needs the avi file of the first pass? I thought that "xvid-twopass.stats" contains all the data needed for second pass. I tested the target size option before with smaller values and got pretty exact sizes so it worked. But after encoding three times with such a big target size I didnt got anything even close to it. This is very annoying as this encoding took my PC about 30 hours and I will have to do it again. So did I do anything wrong or is this a bug in xvid? Regards Alexey

xvidencopts is not an MEncoder option

Hi all, have there been some recent changes with mencoder? A script of mine that encodes video with xvid-codec gives me an error that "xvidencopts is not an MEncoder option". I checked the syntax and also tried out some older version that worked 100% and they give the same error. I updated mplayer to the newest version and than downgraded it to 1.0pre5-r5 again (gentoo portage). Maybe something got mixed up. problems with recording tv

But doesn't interlacing pairs of frames together effectively eliminate every other frame anyway? Won't tinterlace combine two different frames at the end of the three-frame sequence making an ugly frame? I don't see how merging frames together into distorted frames will help the inverse telecine filter know what to do but I'll see if it helps.

two pass encoding with pullup

Hello. I'm happy for the usefullness of two pass encoding. However, I'm having difficulties understanding how to use it with IVTC filters, like pullup. What should the first pass look like if I use pullap to ivtc the video? should the pullup filter be active on both passes or just on the second? The reason I ask is because when I use the pullup filter on both passes I can sometimes see some ugly bit usage on moving objects and so on. I havn't tried yet with pullup of on the first pass, but I'm still not sure if that is the right thing to do... thx for any help.

inverse telecine with 60 fps progressive video

I'm having difficulty getting a filter to correctly inverse telecine 60 fps progressive material that has been damaged by reception problems and edits with the new EDL code. In all cases -fps is set to 59.94 and -ofps is set to 23.976. filmdint works perfectly on perfect material but often when the 3:2 pattern is lost, it does the worst thing possible by getting the 3:2 pattern backwards. That means it pulls the first and last frames from the three frame sequence and completely skips the two frame sequence leaving me with 12 fps video. It will continue to do this until another break in the pattern somehow causes it to start working again. Verbose mode shows that it's correctly recognizing the duplicate frames (the sad values are all zero for those frames) but it never realizes it's doing it all wrong. The options I'm using are: filmdint=io=5:2/dint_thres=256/sad_thres=0/diff_thres=0. pullup+softskip (the latest version in CVS) also works perfectly on perfect material with strict breaks set to 1. It even does somewhat better with the troublesome pattern breaks but it still doesn't completely recover. It often bounces back and forth every few seconds from pulling the right frames and pulling the stuttery 12 fps pattern like filmdint does. I need to run this with verbose turned on to see why it's not recovering. ivtc=1 simply doesn't work. It picks the wrong frames from the very beginning. I guess it's not expecting to see multiple progressive frames. Would another filter like decimate help these filters by removing the duplicate frames, giving the filters something closer to what they expect? It seems like this should be a very easy pattern to pull from since all the frames are progressive and clean (just that some of them are missing sometimes).

My partial success trying to make part of DVD a streaming Internet video.

My main question is at bottom, if I can create a file for Windows Media Player that will stream. I am also open to suggestions about my command line, and better compression. Thank you in advance, here goes... Someone sent me section of a DVD and I was able to copy the files to my hard disk and access like mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device /var/www/html/dvd My goal was to make the output Web file a lower resolution, compress as much as possible, and put on Internet. After much reading of newsgoups, I came up with mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device /var/www/html/dvd -afm ffmpeg -vfm ffmpeg -oac mp3lame -lameopts br=48 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4v2:vqscale=10 -vf scale=270:135 -o movie_abr48_q10_270_120.avi which makes a video that works very well. However it seems I am still getting about 20% worse compression than I see on the news.yahoo.com videos. My biggest problem, however, is the video does play with Windows Media Player, but it does not stream. It is 10 MB so takes minutes to load/start, and you only see a blank screen. I have tried giving my file a .mpeg or .avi extension. If I run mencoder with -of mpeg I get many lines like Unknown block type, possibly non-MPEG stream! 6mb A-V:0.057 [0:0] and a bad output file. Someone wrote me this about streaming video files (last two paragraphs). I have not seen much supporting documentation for this. Is this true? thank you very much in advance, tom http://www.readyink.com yes, this is where you either 1) Pay Microsoft for Windows hosting including streaming or 2) Convert the file from it's current .avi format [which puts the ident at the end of the file] to a .mpeg [which puts the ident at the beginning allowing the file to stream]. Personally, I would go with #2 and use .mpeg (quicktime) formats. These are more standard than microsoft's avi which contain to many codec's to be viable. Someone wrote me.

mencoder/mplayer, -ss and DVDs

Hi, I'm trying to use mencoder to rip and encode a segment from a single chapter of a DVD. My command looks like: mencoder dvd://1 -chapter 7-7 -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=1000 -vf scale=720:480 -ofps 24000/1001 -ss 43 -endpos 129 -o grosse_pointe_blank-720x480-1.0Mbps-mpeg2.avi but it seems to ignore -ss. -endpos works fine though. Is this not possible? Do I need to rip and encode the segment from the beginning of the chapter and then re-encode it (using -ovc copy) with -ss 43? Will that work?
