Can you slow down mencoder?

Hello all, My situation is that I need to encode the same content from a video grab card to two different bitrates at the same time. The files need to be ready for use at roughly the same time (ie, the end of the show!). Unlike Windows Media Encoder, or Helix Producer, it's not possible with mencoder to grab to two different output rates at the same time (or am I wrong???). What I have to do is grab from the tv capture card to filename.avi, and while it's still grabbing from the tv card, run mencoder against filename.avi to also produce an identical file at a lower bitrate. My problem is that the second mencoder runs faster than real time, catches up with the end of the file, and then exits while the primary encode is still running. Is it possible to slow down mencoder so that it also runs in realtime, so that if I start it running 10 seconds after the initial grab, it'll run second by second against the file being grabbed, instead of 'as fast as computerly possible'? Or is there some other way to feed the content of filename.avi into mencoder in real time for encoding? a-v synchronization problems of some NTSC DVDs with -oac copy

Hello, I have recently ran into A-V synchronization problems while encoding some NTSC DVDs. I looked at the mailing list archive and found very similar symptoms in a thread by Corey Hickey on March 15th ("a-v sync problems with pullup, softskip (only on some DVDs)"). I have studied the answers but I was unable to fix the problem. It seems that the problem was a bug in the code that has been fixed. But I didn't find a reference to the version of MPlayer that has the bug fixed. I'm using version 1.0pre6 compiled from sources on a Gentoo system (For Gentoo users: I had to recompile MPlayer recently with the dts flag to get FFMPEG support again.) To reiterate the problems. I have noticed a short sync delay (of order of ms) with some DVDs that I converted while there was no sync problem with other DVDs. All the DVDs are in the NTSC format. The original DVDs show no sync problems, of course. The problematic DVDs are stored progressive with exception of a couple of short scenes with telecined content. I used the following command line for the encoding: mencoder -vf pullup=2:2:4:4,softskip,crop=704:368:8:60 -ofps 23.976 -oac copy -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1:${xvidencopts} -o movie.avi where $xvidencopts is xvidencopts="bitrate=1800:me_quality=6:nointerlacing:noqpel:gmc:trellis:quant_type=mpeg: vhq=4:autoaspect:chroma_opt:hq_ac:min_iquant=1:min_pquant=1:min_bquant=1". I use the same commands (with exception of the cropping parameters and bitrate) for all DVDs, with some it works with other I get the problem. So it seems that the problem must be in the DVDs themselves. Some observations that I made: 1) the sync problem would be there even if I omitted pullup and softskip filters. One DVD that I have has first telecined content in the middle of the movie, however the sync problems would be there from the very beginning (with or without pullup,softskip) 2) there would be no sync problem if I compressed the audio stream with lame instead of just copying it. 3) MEncoder issues "1 duplicte frame(s) found" warning now and then. (I wasn't able to make out the right answer in the responses in Corey's thread) Why does it appear in progressive content? 4) I use Windows Smartripper to backup the DVDs and MPlayer seems to have wrong information about the length of the movie (checked on the OSD display). However the result is always OK (as far as length is concerned). I'm including this observation here only for completeness. (BTW: I have a very small Linux partition (3GB) so I have to grab the DVD on a Windows partition) 5) the sync problems exist only for some mixed-content DVDs not all of them. I'm using MEncoder only for a couple of months now. So I'm no expert. If I overlooked something obvious, I apologize in advance! Thank you for your thoughts/comments. David

Problem with encoding on _every_ cvs snapshot after 2005/03/06

Hello all, first of all, thanks for your work, I love encoding with mencoder :) Today while updating to the last CVS after some time I've stumbled on a strange problem - an encoding which worked smoothly before the update now showed an error (non-fatal), and the final avi file showed some corrupted frames in the same place where the error occurred. I'll go in a little more detail shortly, but first let me tell you that I think I've spotted the exact CVS file where this "bug" (if it is a bug) was introduced. I've tested a lot of CVS snapshots, and the problem is NOT present in all snapshots up and including MPlayer-20050306.tar.bz2. The problem is present in MPlayer-20050307.tar.bz2 and all the snapshots afterwards, including the official 1.0pre7 release. The problem manifests itself in two way: 1) When I play the .VOB file using a gmplayer compiled from a snapshot taken after 03/06, at a very precise place in the file (247s) gmplayer writes the This does _not_ happen with earlier gmplayers. 2) When I encode the .VOB file to avi using a gmplayer compiled from a snapshot taken after 03/06, at the same place in the file mecoder reports a duplicate frame, then after having encoded for another minute or so it reports a CRC error: Pos: 247.1s 6184f ( 4%) 54fps Trem: 40min 415mb A-V:-0.080 [504:134] 1 duplicate frame(s)! a52: CRC check failed! ) 53fps Trem: 39min 413mb A-V:-0.053 [502:134] a52: error at resampling Earlier versions of mencoder don't find any duplicate frames around that position in the file, and they don't complain about CRC errors. As I said, the final file has visible corruption of frames at ~247 seconds, while the same file encoded with an earlier mencoder has not. That's all I know. It seems it may be something in libavcodec/mpegvideo.c or similar files. I don't know. My system is a Fedora 2 on a 2.6.10-1 kernel, but I don't think that's relevant. Bug in mplayer/mencoder 1.0pre7 and CVS regarding -audiofile / seperate audio file leads to crash or async video, take 10 seconds and try yourself

Hello list! Try this: mplayer video.avi -audiofile audio.mp3 When you feel lucky hit the 'q'-key to quit mplayer and it will crash instantly. Another issue is muxing the two streams together: mencoder video.avi -audiofile audio.mp3 -ovc copy -oac copy -o new.avi It will skip lots of frames and the result will be out of sync badly. It seems to crash, too, but not hard as above. I could post a lot more info like the devs want on their website, but I guess it's happening to any x86 user anyway (I'm on a gentoo box and I also chattet to a Slackware user in #mplayer on freenode who suffered the same crash) so there's no point to tell you guys about the specifics of my system ;-) Sure thing it happens relatively seldom a user wants to use a seperate audiotrack with mplayer, but I think more people want to mux two streams, so it'll be great to have that fixed :=) Cheers Sebastian

Compressibility test

Hi everybody! My question is the following: is a pre-pass with vqscale=2 a good indicator of the compressibility of a file? I have a collection of episodes 13 that I want to backup to a DVD+R. Obviously, I could simply calculate 4.38GB / 13, and have each episode use the same bitrate. However, I expect that some will require a higher bitrate than others. Hence the need for some sort of "compressibility measure": I could just do a pre-pass with vqscale=2, and use the resulting file size to calculate the proportion of the available space which should be given to the episode.
