problems with target size and xvid

Hi everybody, I am using mplayer-1.0_pre5-r5 and xvid-1-0.2 on gentoo linux and I have a problem with the target size. I dont get the size I specify. I use mencoder as encoder and these are the settings I use. mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device /path/to/dvd -nosound -xvidencopts :bitrate=-1790943:pass=1:vhq=4:me_quality=6:chroma_me:quant_type=mpeg:max_bframes=2:gmc -o /dev/null mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device /path/to/dvd -nosound -ovc xvid -xvidencopts :bitrate=-1790943:pass=2:vhq=4:me_quality=6:chroma_me:quant_type=mpeg:max_bframes=2:gmc -o output.avi Although this should have produced a filesize of about 1.7GB I got 2.8GB. Could it be that the second pass needs the avi file of the first pass? I thought that "xvid-twopass.stats" contains all the data needed for second pass. I tested the target size option before with smaller values and got pretty exact sizes so it worked. But after encoding three times with such a big target size I didnt got anything even close to it. This is very annoying as this encoding took my PC about 30 hours and I will have to do it again. So did I do anything wrong or is this a bug in xvid? Regards Alexey

I'm using MEncoder 1.0pre6-3.3.4. I have an avi file, created with mencoder, that was made with '-oac copy'. Now I am trying to convert that avi/pcm file to an avi/mp3 file. Not to mention the immediate "Skipping frame!". Note that I have also tried just about every -lameopts option too, to no avail. I checked if lame was working and it will convert a wav file to a mp3 file perfectly. So, lame is fine, at least when ran on its own. Could mencoder somehow not be using lame correctly? (If there are any lame experts out there, is there a way to use lame directly to do the conversion and not alter the video, ala 'lame pcm.avi mp3.avi'?) If you are wondering why I am not creating an avi/mp3 to begin with, it is because I am using btaudio (I don't have a standalone sound card) and I could only get it to record via pcm. problem with the aspect ratio

hello i have an .avi file without any audio stream. it has the correct aspect-ratio. i play it with mplayer and all goes ok. i execute ogmmerge to merge the audio file (audio.ogg) and the video file (video.avi) into an ogm file. but when i play with mplayer the resulting ogm file i see it with the wrong aspect ratio. the commands i use : ---- the script to encode the dvd ------ mencoder -nosound -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=$1:vhq:v4mv:vqmin=2:vlelim=-4:vcelim=9:lumi_mask=0.05:dark_mask=0.01:aspect=1.78:vpass=1 -vop scale=$3,crop=$2 -ofps 23,976 -aspect 1.78 -o /dev/null stream.dump mencoder -nosound -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=$1:vhq:v4mv:vqmin=2:vlelim=-4:vcelim=9:lumi_mask=0.05:dark_mask=0.01:aspect=1.78:vpass=2 -vop scale=$3,crop=$2 -ofps 23,976 -aspect 1.78 -o video.out stream.dump ------------------------------------------------- finally : ogmmerge -o video.ogm -A video.out audio.ogg ------------------- the output --------------------------- Using AVI demultiplexer for video.out. Multiplexing with mencoder

Hi, I have just checked out CVS version of the mplayer, since it has the new MPEG muxer. I was experimenting with it and ... when I try to convert a trailer movie (MOV: video->SVQ3, audio->QDM2) to mpeg2 the audio doesn't get converted. This movie is played correctly on mplayer and the codecs are loaded correctly. Quesions : why is this happening? can it be fixed? and how to handle that? Question: is it possible to use mencoder as a multiplexer. I can successfully rip video to m2v and audio to mp2. How can I multiplex them to mpeg2(and dvd) formats Thanks, Luke

MEncoder MPEG-2 framecopy

Hi, Using mencoder -ovc copy -oac copy bla.mpeg -o test.mpg -of mpeg -mpegopts format=mpeg2 I get a non-seekable mpeg2 file. MPlayer plays it, but when seeking it jumps to EOF (or BOF..) and closes the file. MPEG1 framecopy works fine, I get a nice seekable MPEG file. Changing to -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video fixes this, I get a seekable MPEG2 video. Is this a bug or an unsolvable limitation?.. - ods15

Frame Rate and file Size

I have a strange problem I quite don't understand here. I want to make a divx with 2000 jpg. So I use the following command: mencoder mf://*.jpg -mf w=512:h=256:fps=30:type=jpg -ofps 30 -nosound -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4v2:vbitrate=500 -o movie.avi Then I get a 5 MB movie of 67 sec and I am happy with that. But I also want to make a version at 5 fps (it is a scientific movie so that I want to have a slow version to see details without having to settle the speed on the player everytime). So I use: mencoder mf://*.jpg -mf w=512:h=256:fps=5:type=jpg -ofps 5 -nosound -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4v2:vbitrate=500 -o movie.avi I have the same number of frame (2000), the same effective bitrate (I checked), only the fps (i.e. the movie is now 400 sec) has changed, but I get a 25 MB movie! But there is the same amount of information to encode in the second case isn't it? So why should the file size be different? thanks for your help!

Mencoder encodes only a few minutes

I captured an AVI file with a length of 1h. Encode And Combine

Is it possible to use mencoder to encode frames 150 through the end of file (to remove the trailer)? Also, is it possible to use mencoder to combine two mpeg files into one? Segmentation fault while making avi from jpgs with mencoder

I'm using mencoder to encode .avi files from jpgs coming from surveillance cameras, i run a cron script hourly that takes all the jpgs from the directory used by the cameras to upload jpgs via FTP, but i get segmentation faults 50% of the times when doing the encoding, no matter which codec i select (except raw). This is the line that i use to encode the files. mencoder mf://$CAMDIR/$CAM/$CAM\_$HOUR*.jpg -mf w=320:h=240:type=jpg:fps=10 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4 -oac copy -o $WWWDIR/$CAM/$CAM\_$HOUR\00.avi and this is my mencoder version. MEncoder 1.0pre6-3.3.4 (C) 2000-2004 MPlayer Team CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Xeon/Celeron Northwood (Family: 8, Stepping: 4) I'll greatly appreciate any help.

Hi, I´ve made a dvd copy (mpeg2) with instructions from a list long time ago,i got a strange message with dvdauthor: WARN:unknown mpeg2 aspekt ratio 1. The DVD it works except this dummy Warning at the creation of dvd tree. Thanks Menuhin
