Video iPod
by Andrea Gelmini 10 Nov '05

Hi all, I've got a new iPod and I would like to upload videos, but I dunno how to encode it in the right way (by the way, I haven't apple computers/microsoft OS, so I cannot use iTunes). So, thanks a lot in advance for your time/clues. From the specs I read I have to choose to encode between: -> H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats -> MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats Yesterday and today I've googled a lot, but I found only a lot of front ends (of mplayer/mencode) for OSX, not the simple command line of mencoder (well, I also found a lot of things l do not care, such encoding in raw, and so on). At the end you can find the output of a file I can play on iPod. Encoded DVD's appear too short
by Ben Nemec 09 Nov '05

09 Nov '05

Just a minor niggle here with the DVD's that I encode using MEncoder. For some reason the lengths of tracks that I encode with it show up about half as long as they should in lsdvd and my standalone player. I think MPlayer pre7 may have identified them that way too, although I'm using current CVS now and it gets the lengths right. I've double-checked my command-line options and as far as I can tell they're okay. Here's my command-line (with line breaks added): mencoder "$infile" -of mpeg -vf scale=720:-2,expand=720:480,harddup\ -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3:abitrate=192:vcodec=mpeg2video:\ keyint=18:vrc_buf_size=1835:vrc_maxrate=9800:vbitrate=5000:aspect=4/3\ -mpegopts format=dvd -srate 48000 -af lavcresample=48000 -ofps 30000/1001\ -o temp.mpg The resulting file is then passed to dvdauthor to create the disk structure. Is this more likely an MEncoder problem or should I be looking at dvdauthor? It's not a major issue, but it would be nice to get accurate times for the resulting discs. Thanks. -Ben

Creating raw YUV files from movies or images
by Ola Jetlund 09 Nov '05

09 Nov '05

Hi, for my work I need to create raw YUV files. That is videofiles that consists of uncoded images in a sequence - the most basic form of a video file. I thought that both mencoder and mplayer wore able to export such files (from the documentation). I guess I was wrong. For instance trying the yuv4mpeg options or dumpstream option produces a YUV file with a header - which is NOT what I want - especially since trying to play it without the header produces rubbish. The test for wether or not a YUV-file is actually raw is the following mplayer -rawvideo on:fps=30:w=352:h=288 raw_yuv_movie_cif.yuv if this is something that is visual then the movie is raw and can be easily imported into software such as Octave and Matlab. After a few days of testing and swearing I was able to produce this videos using a second software called avi2raw (I'm running OS X abd Linux computers). Then a working procedure is like this: mencoder -ovc raw -oac copy -vf format=i420 -nuvopts raw:nolzo -o output.avi input.mp4 avi2raw output.avi final.yuv As the learned reader may observe my YUV file is now a YUVi420 file - which is exactly what I want. Well so far so good. PROBLEM IS I want to do the same thing starting out with a set of images (in tiff format). Since my mencoder does not accept tiff I use TGA: convert -scale x576 -shave 336x0 img0001.tif 4cif_0001.tga This way I get a tga image that could be part of a 4cif movie.... Then I try the following: mencoder mf:// -mf w=704:h=576:fps=24:type=tga -ovc raw -oac copy -vf format=i420 -nuvopts raw:nolzo -noframedrop -o output.avi this avi can be played in so mplayer - however stripping of the AVI header and creating a YUVi420 seems impossible. Could somebody tell me wether I have missed a big point here or give me some hints on how to proceede? best regards Ola Jetlund

change bpp
by Aleksandar Uzelac 09 Nov '05

for some time now i'm trying to change color depth of mpeg2 video while converting it to xvid. mencoder creates xvid file with 12bpp, but if i try to convert same mpeg2 video to divx (with lavc) mencoder creates divx with 24bpp (and the difference is significant). how do i change pixel color depth (bpp, biBitCount)? configuration info: MPlayer 1.0pre6-3.2.3 divx: "c:\Program Files\mplayer\mencoder" dvd://1 -dvd-device "H:/filmovi/movie" -oac lavc -ofps 25.000 -vf crop=704:576:8:0,hqdn3d=2:1:2,scale=528:432 -ovc lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3:abitrate=96:vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1059:v4mv:mbd=2:trell:cmp=3:subcmp=3:mbcmp=3:autoaspect:vpass=1 -o h:/movie.avi xvid: "c:\Program Files\mplayer\mencoder" dvd://1 -dvd-device "H:/filmovi/movie" -oac lavc -ofps 25.000 -vf crop=704:576:8:0,hqdn3d=2:1:2,scale=528:432 -ovc xvid -lavcopts acodec=ac3:abitrate=96 -xvidencopts bvhq=1:vhq=4:hq_ac:trellis:gmc:qpel:me_quality=6:chroma_me:chroma_opt:bitrate=1059:pass=1 -o h:/movie.avi

WMV3/WMV9 encode
by silent tone 07 Nov '05

07 Nov '05

The information page says that transcoding to WMV3 is possible, but I haven't found the parameters to do this. I have downloaded the full win32 codec pack, but I've only managed to encode WMV1. Advice?

hqdn3d versus lavc's nr
by Jean Hoderd 04 Nov '05

04 Nov '05

Hi, There seem to be two ways of applying a denoise filter if one is using lavc: one in the video filter chain, with hqdn3d; the other with the nr option in lavcopts. Now, how do these compare exactly, and which one is recommended for a high quality encoding? (And with which settings?) I didn't even know about nr until I saw it in this list. The manual only mentions hqdn3d -- any reason? Thanks for your help! Regards, Jean __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005 http://mail.yahoo.com
