Portions of artifacting with libavcodec
by EC 24 Nov '05

24 Nov '05

I have been using mencoder + lavc mpeg4 to encode dvds and for the most part it has been working out great. But the output of two recent movies I have done (The Life Aquatic and Sin City), have had sections where the mpeg4 blocking/artifacting is horrible. Everything except these short portions looks perfectly fine. Here are two examples: http://ec.firetiger.com/blocked1.jpg http://ec.firetiger.com/blocked2.jpg In the first movie, this happens in a scene with a lot of fast camera panning and water, and in the second it is after an abrupt switch to a rainstorm. I guess these are tough scenes to encode, but it seems like it shouldn't be _so much_ of a problem. Here are the -lavcopts strings I am using: -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2000:mbd=2:trell:v4mv :cmp=3:subcmp=3:precmp=3:dia=2:vpass=1:autoaspect -vf pp=de -o ~/Sin_City.avi Then in latest cvs cmp=3 causes a segfault, so I tried 6: -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2400:mbd=2:trell:v4mv :cmp=6:subcmp=6:precmp=6:vpass=1:autoaspect -vf pp=de -o The_Life_Aquatic.avi Any hints on how to prevent/get rid of these? Life Aquatic was done using week or so old mplayer+libavcodec cvs, but sin city might have been pre7; it was a while ago at least.

[BUGREPORT][minor] Incorrect setting of MP3 bitrate identification tag
by The Wanderer 24 Nov '05

24 Nov '05

I've been doing a fair bit of fiddling around with various encodings of a particular file recently (one of the set of MP4 files for which there are standing bugs), and I've noticed something unusual. I've reproduced it here with a completely unrelated input file, just because. There is a fairly sizable snip in the middle, but all it contains is more "Skipping frame!" and status lines. == wanderer@pegasus:/tmp$ mencoder -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=medium -ovc copy /home/pub/video/Music\ Videos/Indifferent\ Productions\ -\ Stop\ The\ Rock\?.avi -o /tmp/test-bitrate-mislabeling.avi MEncoder dev-CVS-051118-14:29-3.3.5 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team CPU: Advanced Micro Devices Sempron/Athlon MP/XP Thoroughbred; Duron Applebred (Family: 6, Stepping: 0) CPUflags: Type: 6 MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 1 SSE2: 0 Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 3DNow 3DNowEx SSE success: format: 0 data: 0x0 - 0x392e000 AVI file format detected. Starting playback... alsa-uninit: pcm closed Exiting... (End of file) == Note the ID_AUDIO_BITRATE of 32000. The interesting thing is that I get this same value on that line no matter what -lameopts I use, and no matter what input file I use (among the few I've tried), even though the MEncoder run reports the output audio as being of a considerably higher actual bitrate. The output file can still be played without hiccups,and (to within my limited ability to judge) has sound quality commensurate with what you'd expect from the higher bitrate, but the incorrect -identify information is still wrong. The value is calculated (in various places) as (1000/8) * muxer->size / muxer->timer; the latter is calculated in muxer_write_chunk from muxer->h.dwLength * muxer->h.dwScale / muxer->h.dwRate (none of which variables are things I understand well enough to make it worth tracking them down farther), and as far as I've been able to figure out (although it obviously isn't true) the former is never modified from its initial value of 0. Also: I can, and would like to, put this into the Bugzilla as well as sending it here - but I have no clue what component I should file it under; the code trail jumps from one source file to another all over the place, and even if I could figure out which parts were significant, none of them seem to have a corresponding entry in the components list. Any ideas? -- The Wanderer Warning: Simply because I argue an issue does not mean I agree with any side of it. Secrecy is the beginning of tyranny.

avi->dvd: desync problem
by Tomáš Bažant 22 Nov '05

22 Nov '05

i am solving the convertion of 24000/1001 fps AVI with AC3 audio -> 30000/1001 MPEG2 (as input for dvdauthor) while preserving the audio track as is. my command is following: #!/bin/bash mencoder galaxy.avi \ -oac copy \ -mc 0 \ -of mpeg \ -mpegopts format=dvd:telecine \ -ovc lavc \ -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:aspect=4/3:vrc_buf_size=1835:vrc_maxrate=9800:vbitrate=5000:keyint=15: \ -ofps 30000/1001 \ -vf scale=720:-10,expand=720:576 \ -o galaxy.mpg but then the result MPEG2 is desync (audio is earlier than video). to tell the truth, i expected this result, but is there any way how to produce such mpeg2 stream which is ok? thanks

Problem with pre6 -> pre7
by Cultural Sublimation 22 Nov '05

22 Nov '05

Hi, I have problem about new MPlayer version 1.0pre7. The files I encode with mencoder don't work on my DVD player anymore: I only get sound but no video. Everything worked okay with 1.0pre6. I tried rpms from livna, rpmforge, greysector, and freshrpms and they all have the same problem, so I am sure that something must have changed from pre6 to pre7 which my dvd player don't like. I suspect fourcc. LAVC now uses fourcc=34504d46 [FMP4], and I am almost sure that this was different before. Can somebody tell me which fourcc was used before? I can try using -ffourcc option to test if my theory is correct. Also, which rpms are recommended? I know at least four different providers of mplayer rpms. The mplayerhq.hu site links to greysector, but those rpms don't have XviD enabled, so I prefer others. Any experiences? I can try to compile mplayer myself, but I am a bit affraid of the task. I hope you can help me! C.S. __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005 http://mail.yahoo.com

Hi folks, I'm just trying to play C64 Longplay video (#25 - turrican II), I've grabbed in the web. + mplayer crashes with signal 6 (SIGABRT / SIGIOT ?) in decode_video. + mencoder seems to run now, when using pcm output (not finished yet). + ffmpeg doesnt know to handle the audio stream (type 0x0031 ?). + winamp (not quite fresh ...) plays just the audio stream. Anyone who could help ? cu -- "*Who am I*? I am Susan Ivanova, Commander, daughter of Andrei and Sophie Ivanova. > > Try with "-vobsubid xx" instead of "-sid xx". > yeah, i tried that before (though i just double checked) and mencoder fails with "vobsubid is not an MEncoder option". i'm using version 1.0pre7try2-3.4.3 - has -vobsubid been added in the CVS version? i seem to remember reading on the list archive that it was not a feature of mencoder. thanks, -steve diverdi -sdiverdi(a)cs.ucsb.edu
