Removing strange noise around edges
by Fredrik Eriksson 29 Nov '05

29 Nov '05

Hello. I've found some ugly noise that I want to remove. Take a look at the sample image: http://winterbird.no-ip.org/sample.png As you can see there is some strange noise around the edges on his red cloths. This noise changes pattern all the time and is very irritating. But the only way I've found to remove it is to overuse the unsharpening and/or denoising filters, resulting in extensive detail loss, and I don't want that... Does anyone know a way to remove this ugly noise without destroying the rest of the video? A short sample (copied from the dvd to a mpg file) can be found here: http://winterbird.no-ip.org/sample.mpg Thank you. Fredrik

RE: [MEncoder-users] Mencode a movie for a PDA
by Hassel, Scott 28 Nov '05

Which PDA and OS? I convert for viewing on a palm t3 and the screen is 480:320. I use 30fps and a video bitrate of 400. The movies come out very nice. The mencoder command I use: mencoder "inputfile" -vf scale [480:-2 (widescreen) or -2:320 (4:3)] -sws 1 -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=128 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=400 -o "outputfile" This is just a basic single pass encoding. With the smaller screens, I find 2 pass encoding to be completely unnecessary. If I were to drop the bitrate below 400, I bet that the encoding could benefit from 2 pass and a couple of other parameters, however as I usually don't keep movies on my SD cards after watching them the benefit is just not there. -----Original Message----- From: mencoder-users-bounces(a)mplayerhq.hu [mailto:mencoder-users-bounces@mplayerhq.hu]On Behalf Of Stan Sorochan Sent: Monday, November 28, 2005 8:45 AM To: mencoder-users(a)mplayerhq.hu Subject: [MEncoder-users] Mencode a movie for a PDA RE ALL! What are the options that should be used with Mencoder to compress a movie for later viewing on a PDA? The key here is size! Here are the otput parameters that that seem to be pretty much the minimum for a movie to be viewable: avi or mpeg format, 320 by 240 or 176 pixels, Video: 214kbps, 15 frames per second, Audio: 40kbps 44kHz, mono. If done on some proprietory software, the movie with the above characteristics should fit into under 256 MegaBytes in size. I'm also not sure about that encoder that should be used. encoding multiple jpeg files to avi, with strange results.
by Nicholas Mistry 26 Nov '05

26 Nov '05

I recently purchased a dlink dcs-900w wireless webcam with hopes to create timelapse videos from the captured images. I have used mencoder in the past to make timelapse videos, so i figured this was a great tool for the job. I wrote a simple script to grab a jpeg image from the camera every minute and store it with a filename that is in the 'date +%s' format. (for those who dont know: %s = seconds since '00:00:00 1970-01-01 UTC'). This way i dont have to worry about the frame numbering. when i run mencoder with the following commandline: mencoder "mf://*.jpg" -mf fps=4:type=jpeg -o output.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 I get an avi that seems to "flicker" back and forth beteween the first frame and black. There are also some artifacts that start showing up in the top of the image. Trolling through the docs, mailing lists, etc.. i could not configure mencoder to work. Every time the output was the same. DIVX, XVID, MPEG1, MJPEG, etc... Just out of blind luck, i accidentially made a typeo in my script and managed to use imagemagic's convert utility to convert the jpegs into new jpegs. The script then ran mencoder on the NEW jpegs and the movie came out fine. It seems at this point that the problem was how mencoder was reading the jpegs, and not the encoding side.. I am wondering if anyone here has experienced a similar problem when trying to encode a series of jpegs. Could this be a bug with mencoder? I am using: MEncoder 1.0pre7try2-3.4.4 compiled from source. As a side note, i have tried to open the jpeg with all sorts of image programs (command line, and otherwise), and no program reports any errors when opening the original source images. Thanks in advance. -N

Generating Divx/MPEG4 files from ATSC .ts files
by Philip Prindeville 26 Nov '05

I have some HD (1080i) streams that I captured using pchdtvr... And I'm wondering how I can (a) crop the non-display 8 lines (not sure what these are for... possibly closed captions), and (b) deinterlace the content. Oh, and if there is line-21 old-fashioned NTSC style captions, I'd like to strip them, convert them to DTV-style captions, and re-insert them into the stream. Any idea how to do all of this as a 2- or 3-pass script? I've tried the following, but it doesn't seem to work. No idea why. It still is de-interlaced, for instance. Thanks, -Philip #!/bin/sh x() { echo "$@" $@ } bitrate=20000000 for file in "$@"; do dir=`dirname $file` base=`basename $file .ts` prog=`echo $base | sed 's/.*\.$[0-9]$$/\1/'` base=`echo $base | sed "s/\.$prog$//"` base="$dir/$base" for pass in 1 2; do echo "" echo "pass $pass..." echo "" x mencoder -quiet -sws 2 -oac copy -ovc lavc \ -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=$bitrate:vpass=$pass:autoaspect \ -vf crop=1920:1080,scale=1920:1080,pp=hb/vb/dr/al/lb \ -tsprog $prog \ -o "$base.avi" "$file" done done

audio sync failure
by Uzu Maki 24 Nov '05

hi everyone, I am new at using mencoder... I am using the Debian unstable version. here is how I use it: " mplayer -vo null -ao pcm:file=audio.wav dvd://1 oggenc -b 128 audio.wav nice -n 3 mencoder -nosound -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1500:pass=1 -vf crop=720:368:0:60,scale=680:328,pp=lb dvd://1 -o /dev/null nice -n 3 mencoder -nosound -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1500:pass=2 -vf crop=720:368:0:60,scale=680:328,pp=lb dvd://1 -o "movie.avi" ogmmerge -o movie.ogm movie.avi audio.ogg " this work like a charm for small vob files like cookery/music shows recorder from TV on DVD. but when I try to encode larger files (>2Go) I get a delay (not constant) in the audio stream. Impossible to get the sync working... even though the audio and the video are separately perfect... I've seen that I am not alone... http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45451&page=3 but I can't get over that trouble... If someone could point me in the right direction... thank you very much in advance ! François PS: I tried with mp3 too... average or constant bitrate... avi, ogm... no change...
