Hi all, I have a Miro/Pinacle DC30plus installed. My OS is fedora Core 2. I try to capture Videofilm I have on VHS from a recorder plugged into the composite plug of the DC30plus. Matt, The best results I've seen were from the command lines below. This method was taken from section 7.11 of the MPlayer-1.0pre5 manual titled "Making a high quality MPEG4 ("DivX") rip of a DVD movie" DOCS/HTML/en/menc-feat-dvd-mpeg4.html). And it does what the author purports - the quality of the result is simply breath taking. Converting old VHS tapes to DVD

I am looking for a proper way to convert VHS videos to DVD. [BUG]A-V desync with pullup,softskip and b-frames

[sorry to bug you personally, Michael, but I don't know if you subscribe to mencoder-users and I thought you might be interested] I'm having some trouble with mencoder creating files with audio about 200ms or 100ms early. This only occurs when I use b-frames, or pullup and b-frames together; removing either one gets rid of the desync. I'm expecting Rich and Michael to tell me b-frames are evil. :) ...but nevertheless they improve quality slightly and I've been using them up until now. I'm reporting this on the chance the bug is fixable, or at least worth fixing. If not, at least it's on the record for the benefit of other users. The video is 24000/1001 fps progressive during the test section (1800 frames). The source is a DVD, and I am uploading the first part. Strangely enough, I wasn't able to reproduce the same effect on a different DVD. I'm uploading all files mentioned to ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/incoming/desync/ (but it'll take a while). The output files are bzip2ed and attached, as well. The quick breakdown is that enabling b-frames by themselves seems to cause slight desync, and using softskip,pullup makes the desync worse. Using softskip,pullup makes the desync worse, but doesn't seem to affect the sync without b-frames. (yes, I know, the easy solution is just to avoid b-frames, but still...) ---- mencoder test.vob \ -ovc lavc -oac copy -ofps 24000/1001 -frames 1800 file: base.avi output: base.txt result: A-V sync is good ---- mencoder test.vob -vf pullup,softskip \ -ovc lavc -oac copy -ofps 24000/1001 -frames 1800 file: pullup-softskip.avi output: pullup-softskip.txt result: still good ---- mencoder test.vob -lavcopts vmax_b_frames=1 \ -ovc lavc -oac copy -ofps 24000/1001 -frames 1800 file: bframes.avi output: bframes.txt result: audio about 100ms early ---- mencoder test.vob -vf pullup,softskip -lavcopts vmax_b_frames=1 \ -ovc lavc -oac copy -ofps 24000/1001 -frames 1800 file: pullup-softskip-bframes.avi output: pullup-softskip-bframes.txt result: audio about 200ms early I also tested with only softskip alone instead of pullup,softskip, and there was no noticable difference compared to not using any vfilters at all. That is, softskip doesn't seem to change anything. Hi Could someone point out to me what the most useful options for mencoder are. I have read the man page, and understand most of it, but I need some advice on ripping a dvd. Space isnt an issue, but I really want high quality. Is upping the vbr the best way to clear a pixelated or grainy image? How about pre-processing? Thanks -- Matt Fear of a flat planet

chroma bleeding

Hi. I'm encoding a badly mastered anime DVD (hence pullup AND pp=l5) and I'm getting chroma bleeding at the edges. Any tips on how to avoid it? Hello, I'm trying to record TV with mencoder but i always have the same problem. I tryed to look on google for it, but didn't find a good answer. I have to say first that i can watch TV with mplayer. Gentelmen, I tried to code the *.yuv files into the *.h264 files with the help of the programm ffmpeg.exe. This programm creates only the empty *.h264 files with the words "Unsupported codec for output stream #0.0". Can you tell me, where is the decission of such problem? FPS changed ... -> 0.000

Hi, I'm having a sporatic problem with ty files I grab from my tivo where I get the following message: Warning! FPS changed 29.970 -> 0.000 (29.969999) [15] This is the last thing mencoder does before getting caught in what appears to be an infinite loop (it ran for over 48 hours on a p4@3GHz with no further messages). I think this is happening when a tivo loses its satellite feed temporarily, resulting in a blank space in the .ty file? Trying to play the .ty file with mplayer results in a similar problem - the display garbles and then freezes until one presses an arrow key to seek forward a bit, when the display returns. Seems to me the right thing to do is default FPS to 1 when it is set to 0, which is an impossible value. That way you get some garbled and perhaps black frames for a few seconds, and the display would hopefully return... Alternatively, any ideas on how to work around this problem in a scriptable way? capturing TV audio via btaudio fails

Hello, I cannot seem to get btaudio to capture any TV audio with my Hauppauge bt878 card and would appreciate any help on this. A quick background. I have a machine set up to only record TV programs and will not be used to play anything. Therefore, I did NOT install a sound card since I had read the mplayer/mencoder and v4l documentation which stated that I should be able to use the bt878/btaudio method to capture TV sound. I have built the kernel (2.6.8.1) 3 different ways - alsa/btaudio, oss/btaudio, and both alsa/btaudio oss/btaudio together - but the failure to capture audio is always the same. These 3 different kernel builds had the sound system/btaudio built into the kernel and not as modules. Since the oss/btaudio has been around the longest and most of the documentation refers to it, I have been using that kernel to troubleshoot this issue. The kernel (oss/btaudio) is recognizing the audio function of the bt878 as can be seen with dmesg: btaudio: Bt878 (rev 2) at 00:0b.1, irq: 10, latency: 32, mmio: 0xe1800000 btaudio: using card config "default" btaudio: registered device dsp0 [digital] btaudio: registered device dsp1 [analog] btaudio: registered device mixer0 Note that a 'dsp' (without the trailing '0') and a 'dsp1' are created in /dev/sound and then are soft linked to /dev. I can then run the following: sox -c 1 -u -r 32000 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp1 dsp1.wav sox -c 1 -u -r 32000 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp dsp.wav dsp1.wav is a proper wav file that can be played with xmms. In this case, it sounded like an infomercial, so it must be capturing from TV. dsp.wav is a 44 byte "empty" file. I assume 44 bytes is the size of a wav file header. So, it would appear that /dev/dsp1 is working and in a proper state to capture TV audio. Now, finally, the mencoder problem. I also tried adding the 'amode=X' option which made no difference. Also note that replacing the audio options with a 'noaudio' produces a file with proper video capture, but with the expected no audio capture. Any input on this problem would be appreciated.
