Download an install the SDL libraries, and the mixer and all. The enable SDL for mplayer - it's makes a big difference even if the X11 works, you can resize the window and full screen works

Other than that, it sound like mplayer simply didn't compile anything for X11... You may want to download the CVS version, the configure script is alot cleaner and it has support for buffering now (so the playback is not jerky and all), you will have download lame-libs (mp3 lame support what ever that it), you can find them at rpmfind.net...

After you do get it working, the thing does kick @ss!!! :-)
