[MPlayer-users] mplayer has stopped controlling the volume.

Have you tried the -mixer and -mixer-channel options?
They if it works with amixer you should know the right ones, and it should work no different from MPlayer than from these programs.

So what does it use then when it does not get stuck?
I am a little confused.
But overall it sounds like maybe some udev stuff decided to re-name your audio device and it's using something not suitable/working now?
