[MPlayer-users] Limiting screenshot rate during video playback

  $ mplayer -vf screenshot foo.m3u8

to play a video (Linux). The console says

  VIDEO:  [H264]  1024x480  0bpp  25.000 fps    0.0 kbps ( 0.0 kbyte/s)
  AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 1 ch, s16le, 0.0 kbit/0.00% (ratio: 0->96000)

So, the video stream has a frame rate of 25 fps. When I press
shift-s to generate shreenshots continuously, mplayer generates 25
screenshots per second, as expected.

However, in the original video stream, two or three consecutive
frames are identical (same image). So I could save a lot of disk
space if only half as many screenshots per second were generated.
Is there a way to limit the number of screenshots per second
without affecting the actual playback speed?
