Thanks for the info about this.

I would happily switch back to alsa, if it weren't for the strage 
reinitialization thing it does whenever I seek, and the thing dvdnav 
does on chapter break.

BTW: the standard sound configuration for PA has some idle timer 
working, so whenever I pause playback in some application and restart 
again, the AV receiver takes about half a second to play audio again. If 
I have this idle timer (/etc/pulse/default.pa: load-module 
module-suspend-on-idle) deactivated, this doesn't happen, but then I 
cannot have mplayer use alsa, because pulse blocks the audio output :(
That's the initial reason I'm looking for passthrough with PA.

Don't know if the AV receiver is crap or is there another explanation 
why this muting with the idle filter is going on? From what I was 
reading, I'm not the only one with this issue, and the standard answer 
was to disable the suspend-on-idle module (which doesn't go well with my 
intended use of alsa)
