And what would those be? What if I have a setup that has none of them? Who
decides what common fonts are? To me the obvious solution would be that it
either reads the fonts, or it does not.

That way if you have only your standard fonts, then it reads those. If you
have every font in the universe installed AND it slows down mplayer AND it
bothers you, you have the option of turning it off.
If you have a lot of fonts and it does not bother you that it slows down,
you just leave everything as it is.
