Could you confirm that it was actually compiled with 
support for vda?
I.e., is there a file libavcodec/vda_h264.o that you 
can delete and then rebuild with 
$ make libavcodec/vda_h264.o
?

(Sorry, but I cannot test on Snow Leopard.)
