No. configure auto detects it by default. You can, however, make mplayer 
detect it with ./configure --enable-runtime-cpudetection
(which is an --enable-* switch, and shouldn't be used by normal users...)

So it is just the other way round. ./configure && make will produce a 
binary tailored for the cpu you're running on, not a generic version. To 
get a generic version, you need extra switches.
