I'm converting some .mkv files that have soft subtitles in ASS format
to .mp4 files so I can play them on my kindle fire. I've been using
this command to convert them.

mencoder "$1" -sid 0 -ovc x264 -x264encopts
bitrate=2000:nocabac:level_idc=30:bframes=0:threads=auto:global_header:no8x8dct
- -oac faac -faacopts br=96:raw=yes:mpeg=4:object=2 -channels 2 -of lavf
- -lavfopts format=mp4 -vf
pullup,softskip,pp=fd,scale=1024:-10,hqdn3d,harddup -o "$1".mp4

And it works well, but the subtitles are in the non .ass styles. So I
tried adding -ass to the mencoder option and while the video still
worked there were no subtitles. Is there anyway I can get the .ass
subtitles hardcoded into the video? So of the videos have karaoke or
positioned subtitles and it would be nice to have those.

Thanks,

Kevin
