I've used other compressors as detailed -

http://alsa.opensrc.org/Ladspa_(plugin)

with some success - I didn't use from mplayer direct but by making 
.asoundrc then eg. mplayer -ao alsa:device=ladcomp.

I don't have pulseaudio so don't know if that will mess things up.
