So I think the issue _is_ performance. Deinterlacing takes a lot of
grunt work, and your card can barely keep up. BBC HD is MBAFF H264 at
1440x1080 at 60Hz, and your card as benchmarked can do 1920x1080 @ 64
frames/sec.
Add in deinterlacing and I could easily see it getting into a state
where it can't keep up and everything snowballs from there. Seeking
resets the situation, so it works again for a little while before
getting wedged again.

I've got a much more powerful card, GT 520 (vdpau feature set D,
fanless, replaced my 8400gs), and I'm watching a F1 BBC HD recording
with deint=3 to see if I can see anything similar - nothing yet, I'll
watch to the end of the GP (I think Hamilton wins!).
