You really should get and compile a nightly snapshot. Since 1.0rc4, there are
quite some improvements of the GUI.

/usr/local/share/mplayer/skins/default has to be a directory with a skin
file in it.

In your case, /usr/local/share/mplayer/skins/default/skin is a directory.

MPlayer installs a /usr/local/share/mplayer/skins directory in which you
place the Blue (or other) skin and set a link named default to it (if you
want to use it as default and withouth a special -skin option):

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 22 21:26 Blue
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    4 Jun 22 21:26 default -> Blue
