The idea would be to make configure git clone/pull automatically,
as described here:

Until someone actually gets to implement that (my motiviation for
shell hacking is really low unfortunately), just replacing the
ffmpeg/ directory with a
git clone git://git.videolan.org/ffmpeg.git
should work (possibly you have to remove it from svn:externals to make
svn stop complaining).
