Because *dvd://* and *dvdnav://* are MPlayer options not a devices and
it works with MPlayer only and you must give them actual device
additionally as by:
mplayer -dvd-device=/dev/sr0 dvd://
mplayer -dvd-device=/dev/sr0 dvdnav://
