Yes, you are correct about  -vo directx:noaccel, I had forgotten about 
that fix.  However my experience was that the medicine was worse than 
the disease.  With no acceleration in directx, I had very few large 
files that would play smoothly.  I occasionally had a problem with the 
gl2 driver on laptops, but I would think that almost any video card less 
than two years old would work well nowadays.

I've never tried  -vo direct3d.  Maybe I'll take that out for a spin one 
of these days.
