It is hardware control registers that need to be properly set-up
before writing.
Latest SVN vidix is fixed, so xvidix and cvidix should work again,
however it is possible that it will "scramble" your X and console output.
Otherwise you should maybe try to enable or disable KMS.
However that, and the issues with xv and gl really should be reported
to Ubuntu.
