[MPlayer-users] external file with ass styles

I'd like to override the styles in a ass subtitle track in a mkv file.
The MPlayer man page says:

-ass-styles <filename>
Load all SSA/ASS styles found in the specified file and use them
for rendering text subtitles. The syntax of the file is
exactly like the [V4 Styles] / [V4+ Styles] section of SSA/ASS.

I thought that the "external styles" should override the "internal
styles", literally substituting them.
So I wrote a mystiles.ass file putting in it the [V4+ Styles] section
of the subtitles in the mkv and changing some of their parameters
(shados, font, colors).
When I run

  mplayer -ass-styles mystiles.ass myfile.mkv

the style file is ignored and the internal styles are used. There's
nothing in the output of mplayer -v either.
Did I misunderstand something?
If possible I'd like to have an example of how this should work -
besides, using the "ass-force-style" on the command line works as
expected (but it's a pain to use with a lot of parameters).
