I'm not sure this can help you with what you want to do, but have you
tried something like this?:
$ mkfifo -m 660 stream_fifo.yuv
$ mplayer -vo yuv4mpeg:file=stream_fifo.yuv -nosound -benchmark <inputfile>
and now, on a second terminal:
$ ivfenc <options> stream_fifo.yuv outfile.vp8
