It apparently had to do with buffering...
Here's what I ended up doing:

| tr '\r' '\n' \
| awk 'BEGIN {b=99} /^Pos/ {i=match($0,'/[0-9]%/');
a=substr($0,i,1);if (a!=b) {b=a; print $0}};! /^Pos/ {print $0}; fflush()' \
| zenity --text-info --title "Ripping $TTILE"
It only prints the status line at every new % and it prints every other
message. I need to eliminate blank lines; that's next.
