As much as necessary to exactly reproduce your problem, but not more;-)
Please read http://ffmpeg.org/bugreports.html it basically is also true for MPlayer.

You may try -demuxer lavf, but I believe samples are even interesting if they
fail with -demuyer lavf or -demuxer -lavf,
