[MPlayer-users] gmplayer fails in fullscreen mode; mplayer works fine

When my system displays a video file (any file tried) using gmplayer, if
the user changes the display from "Normal Size" to "Double Size" or
"Fullscreen" the window changes size as requested, but the area occupied
by the video does not, leaving a small display area surrounded by a
large blue or black border.  This doesn't happen using mplayer: pressing
"f" changes the video area to full screen.  Nor does this happen in
Totem.  Does anyone know what's going on or how to fix it.

Appended are the outputs from starting gmplayer and mplayer from a
console.  They are extremely similar except for a few lines:
