Carl, thanks for asking. It seemed like a good idea at the time (tm).
Actually, as I recall it was the only one that produced video. If that
was right then, it certainly is wrong now.

mplayer -vo help
MPlayer SVN-r29251-4.3.2 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team
Available video output drivers:
    vdpau VDPAU with X11
    x11 X11 ( XImage/Shm )
xover General X11 driver for overlay capable video output drivers
    gl X11 (OpenGL)
    gl2 X11 (OpenGL) - multiple textures version
    fbdev Framebuffer Device
    fbdev2 Framebuffer Device
v4l2 V4L2 MPEG Video Decoder Output
    xvidix X11 (VIDIX)
    cvidix console VIDIX
    null Null video output
    mpegpes MPEG-PES to DVB card
    png PNG file

In addition to X11, gl and gl2 produced video, so I'll be trying these.

Question: should any of the other drivers work on my environment (to
Sony LCD via HDMI)? Should any of them be better choices, assuming that
I could get them running?

Thanks.
