[MPlayer-users] video overlay problem

hey,
i connected an additional 22" display to my laptop in order to watch
movies on it. the second screen shows an exact copy of my laptop
screen with the sole exception that when i try to play something with
mplayer it shows up on the laptop yet not on the external screen. the
external screen displays the mplayer window but it's blue.
i did a little research including a search on this mailing list. so
far i couldn't find anything useful. the one expression that kept
popping up was "video overlay" so i chose this as a subject. some
thread i found described the same problem, however, most were without
reply. which means i either ask an incredibly stupid question or it
has nothing to do with video overlay at all. is this an mplayer or an
X issue? how to solve or work around it? i haven't tried any other
player since never use anything else but mplayer :).
system: IBM ThinkPad T42
os: GNU/Linux 2.6.27 Slackware 12.2

graphics: VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon
Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]
X info: X.Org X Server 1.4.2
driver: radeon (built in Xorg driver)
thanks in advance, as
