Instead of asking someone to modify the mplayer source to recognize keys
it currently doesn't, I myself would write something like a mini-frontend
that can read the keys I want. They then would be translated to commands
to be passed to an mplayer running in slave-mode via named pipe.

This worked on commands via serial RS232 interface for me.
