Okay, I don't think I expressed that clearly. Let me try again.

You (Phil Rhods) said "'./configure ; make ; make install' will fail
miserably in most cases".

I said "nonsense, it's worked flawlessly for me from the beginning".

You said "this must be because you customized your system to make that
happen".

I said "no, this was on a fresh, unmodified installation of a popular
distribution".

You said "but having to obtain and unpack the source is too hard for
most people".

This last A: seems to me like a non sequitur and B: ignores the fact
that having the source is a prerequisite for the steps which you said
will fail.

Since this is the case, and since what I was initially objecting to is
the claim that those steps will fail in most cases, I am not sure why
you brought up the point in the first place. The only obvious
explanation I can think of is that you are attempting to argue in bad
faith rather than to engage in serious discussion, and I'd rather not
impute those motivations to you without more solid evidence.
