[MPlayer-users] stupid question - "spdif" AND "hw=2"

No, it seems "02.01" is what works WITHOUT any (explicitly stated) audio errors.
"1.1", "2.2", and anything other than "02.01" (or "2.1") produces explicit errors ("no sound", "cannot find file", etc)
But then, even with "hw=2.1" (without the explicit error messages), I only get two channels, not six!
(and I know for sure the content is 6 ch, as mplayer itself acknowledges in the "AUDIO: ..." line)
please help. Some actual output below:
