[MPlayer-users] newbie edit question

Hello;

I use mplayer often but simply "use" it to play files; it "just works". 
  But now I need to use it as a tool.
I have a set of VOB files ripped from a DVD that mplayer plays 
transparently, but I would like to extract a segment of this video 
stream and save it as a stand-alone file that will play with mplayer or VLC.
Where in the documentation can I read about performing such a task?
