MPlayer used to have an optional component in the TOOLS directory for
a very insecure remote "stream server" which allows a remote MPlayer
to access any MPlayer-accepted url on the server machine. This
includes files, dvd://, vcd://, and of course all the network
protocols and everything else.

Not sure if it still works. I tried it once with my laptop over lan
and was very pleased with the results, but for serious public-network
use you'd need to wrap it with proper security (perhaps tunnelling
over ssh).
