[MPlayer-users] Status of the NUT container format

I'm getting fed up with the AVI format, and did some investigating
to find a good replacement.  On paper, the NUT format seems to be
the best bet, but I've not had much success with it in practice.
Problems range from completely useless files that mplayer can't do
anything with (typically after remuxing AVIs or other formats),
to playable files with a/v sync problems (after recoding other
formats with appropriate codecs).

Are people still working on supporting NUT in mplayer/mencoder,
or did it die due to lack of interest?  And if mplayer doesn't
support NUT yet, does anything?  From what I've read, NUT was
designed by mplayer and ffmpeg developers, so I'm guessing that
support in other players and encoders is even less developed.
