mplayer seems also to fail when asked for mpeg2 playback-
length. Last version on gentoo that returned good guesses
was media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc1-r2. Newer versions miss
correct length by seconds, sometimes minutes or even hours.
I reported that to gentoo bugs (1) last year, they closed
it as UPSTREAM and suggested trying svn until it is fixed.

I kept an old mplayer binary for identifying length of
mpeg2 movies, used up2date ones for playback and forgot
the whole thing. As I read this thread I remembered and
decided to join.
I can still offer samples mplayer fails to detect correct
playback length:
"sample1.mpeg2" (~24mb)
0:00:59 <-- (MPlayer 1.0rc1-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team)
0:00:57 <-- (MPlayer SVN-r26154-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2008 MPlayer Team)
0:00:59 <-- "time ~/svn/mplayer/mplayer sample1.mpeg2"
"sample2.mpeg2" (~34mb)
0:01:36 <-- (MPlayer 1.0rc1-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team)
0:02:15 <-- (MPlayer SVN-r26154-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2008 MPlayer Team)
0:01:36 <-- "time ~/svn/mplayer/mplayer sample2.mpeg2"
