Thanks again Reimar. Sorry for the top-post.

-vf format=y8,scale

I am building a new box (new to me) with an AMD 64 Dual Core (used)
with lots of memory (used) so am looking forward to trying lots of
different spells. Here is my favorite recipe for TV shows:

mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device VIDEO_TS/
-alang en
-oac mp3lame
-lameopts abr:br=128:vol=3
-vf lavcdeint,crop=704:464:8:8,hqdn3d=2:1:2
-ovc lavc
-lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1280:v4mv:mbd=2:trell:cmp=3:subcmp=3:mbcmp=3:mbcmp=3:autoaspect:vpass=1
-o test.avi
&&
mencoder dvd://1
-dvd-device VIDEO_TS/
-alang en
-oac mp3lame
-lameopts abr:br=128:vol=3
-vf lavcdeint,crop=704:464:8:8,hqdn3d=2:1:2
-ovc lavc
-lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1280:v4mv:mbd=2:trell:cmp=3:subcmp=3:mbcmp=3:mbcmp=3:autoaspect:vpass=2
-o 'Buffy-s1e01.avi'

Any thoughts?

Very best regards,
