But it doesn't occur on my Ubuntu box! There I can run 5 clients at the same
time (with performance problems), but all of them show exactly the same
output, all running xv!

That's true, but x11 is not so nice as xv, the third instance doesn't want to
rescale any more!.
So maybe you have some ideas of the difference? Thanks for thinking along.
P.S. log of 5 instances on ubuntu (same except the name of the movie).
