now I think i should wrote "Older versions of MPlayer was able to play..." :)
somehow i forgot to write that I'm using Gentoo and 
the newest available MPlayer
is mplayer-1.0_rc2_p24929-r3

Taking source from SVN was the simplest way to obtain source code with applied
patch described here:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.mplayer.devel/46466
patched version plays every 44.1 and 48 kHz DTS and AC3 file I was able to try ;)

If you asked about output and sample of APE I have to "prepare" something
"small" (smaller than 250 MiB ;)
