I've seen this - it's due to something (mplayer, the video driver, whatever) 
not clearing the video overlay to black before establishing it.

It is fixable with careful code which makes a point of blacking out the 
buffer before and after playing, but there may not be much you can do about 
it as a user. If you're under Windows, try -vo gl or -vo gl2 rather than -vo 
directx (which is the default).
