Well, if your video is to be played on a TV screen with display resolution
352×576, there is not much point in encoding the video at 1024×768, is
there? On the other hand, if your screen is full-HD, the question is
slightly different.

There is another point to consider: by default, mplayer will put subtitles
very near the border of the video. On the other hand, TV sets often crop
quite a lot of video (more than 10%). Therefore, with default settings, you
are likely to end up with half the subtitles cropped. But if you put them
too high, they will hide valuable parts of the contents.

If you intend to burn the resulting transcoded video on a DVD-RW, watch it,
and then discard it, there is not much point in spending a lot of time
fine-tuning the encoding. If you intend to keep it for a long time, you
should try to enhance the balance between file size and quality.

But to do so, you need to use the more advanced features of the codecs,
which may not work on your DVD player.

Considering all this, finding the best settings for your case is something
you must figure out by yourself, by experimenting on your precise hardware.
