Do something like:
mplayer -vc null -vo null -ao null -dumpsub -vobsubout mysub 
-vobsuboutindex 1 movie.vob
This is off the top of my head, but this or something like it will get 
you mysub.vob and mysub.idx fast.
If it doesn't work, search the giant man page for these options for more 
help.
