[MPlayer-users] Generating gif preview

Hello! I need to generate an n-frame gif preview of the given video. In 
the manpage I see, that this can be made with  -vo gif89a,
but I need to make a preview with fixed amount of frames but not a 
constant framerate (regardless of the video length).

Is this possible? I can't find anything similar in Google.
