You can find packages for mencoder and mplayer (with more features) in 
non-official repositories. For example, the one maintain by Christian 
Marillat, 

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ etch main

Or as suggested, you can compile it from SVN. It is very easy to compile 
it.
