Problem identified: it is the DVD not MPlayer! A different DVD (Tomb 
Raider II) works fine.

The affected DVD came with a movie magazine. I suppose it contains some 
bad blocks additionally to the normal CSS protection. Now the funny 
thing: Xine can play this DVD, MPlayer not....
