You wrote about gmplayer, but what about mplayer? Also check your
~/.mplayer/subfont.tff. Set it as symlink to DejaVuSans.ttf,
or any other appropriate Unicode font.

24907 here, but UTF-8 subtitles have been working for some years. Check
your font.
